Given the rarity of the problems, I would wait before making expensive changes. As I mentioned earlier, a large well-placed speck of dust (or an eyelash) on the CD could have accounted for everything you described--and it could have dropped off the CD (and into the innards of your CD player, alas!) by the time you removed the CD. A scratch or pinhole on the CD is less likely, since then the problem would repeat most (not necessarily all, because of the error-correction software in CD players) the times when you played the CD. Start by making sure you're using a clean CD in perfect condition, and try to avoid giving it opportunities to collect even a tiny amount of dust. And, if you have suitable equipment, GENTLY vacuum your CD player to get out whatever dust has inevitably collected inside it over time. GENTLY is VERY important, or you can damage the player. And always have a second CD with you just in case you need it. Then see what happens. With luck you can avoid buying new equipment.
