One thing I had thought of at one point is something like Hobey seems to have, a foot pedal set up to mechanically push the button for an ipod remote, something like this http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB125G/C?fnode=MTY1NDA0OQ&mco=MTA4MjUwNjc with a pedal set to mash the pause/play button.

The ipod dock w/remote above goes for about $50, it has a nice big pause/play button. There seem to be third party remotes for as cheap as $10, though I'm not sure I would trust it. If you're mechanically inclined, you could modify a sewing machine pedal-

to push the button.

I think it's what I'll try if my current system doesn't work out. I too need to start and stop when my hands are full
