To be clear. Melatonin does not make you sleep. Melatonin is a hormone that
regulates the circadian rhythm. Melatonin rises at night. Oddly, melatonin
levels rise at night for both diurnal and nocturnal animals, showing that it
is not sleep inducing. The jury is still out on whether it works or not to
alleviate jet lag but some people swear by it. If you are taking it, take it
at the time you would normally go to sleep at your destination while en
route (this could be in the middle of the day, depending on where you are
going). This may reset your body clock (or it may not). The main cue for
resetting the circadian rhythm is light. So when you get to your
destination, spend as much time as possible pointing your face towards the
sun (be sure to close your eyes!). Light on the backs of your knees (as once
reported and has since been refuted) does not work, however.

Hi Hobey
Some people have used melatonin on long flights with some success. They
found it helped them go to sleep on the plane. You might want to give it a
try. You can find it at your local Health Food store.
