The director of education took me to the office that covers ancient Greece. (to my great disappointment, he was not wearing a toga or other ancient garment) The standard story is that Aesop lived on the island of Samos I asked two questions: How do you pronounce the name "Aesop"? Was Aesop African? (which I had heard) My scholarly advisor said that both questions were connected, his name tells us his origin To be closest to Greek pronunciation, the "a" is silent, use the long "e" sound. Here is the the interesting part the "'s" should sound like a "th" like a lisp "EE THOP" The country just below Egypt is Ethiopia "EE THEE O PIA" I was told that Aesop is actually the Greek word for "the Ethiopian" _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
