Hobey, the Wikipedia editor may have been confused by the word "marionette," as it simply means "puppet" in French. (Spelled a bit differently.)

I had a lot of trouble editing Wikipedia's entry on Charlotte Charke. I had done a lot of research on Charlotte, including reading her memoirs, but there is an editor overseeing the article for the site who keeps changing what I (and others) have written back to his own inaccurate version of her life... a version that actually eliminates her female partner, Mrs Brown, insisting that Mrs Brown was in fact Charke's daughter rather than an actress with whom Charlotte lived for years, and with whom she raised her daughter. (Charke, who often dressed like a man, onstage and off, called herself "Mr Brown" when the family traveled.)

The overseer actually told me that it didn't matter what Charke had written about herself in her own autobiography, as everyone knew she was a notorious liar. I gave up on trying to correct the situation long ago. Wikipedia is one of those democracies where some animals are more equal than others.
Sean

Well I've looked a bit farther and its not so terribly bad and there is
mnothing stopping any of us from making additions or corrections but here
are a couple things.

"In France, the most famous marionette is
Guignol<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guignol>(hand marionette created
in
Lyon <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyon> in 1808)"( wikipedia under
marionette)

Now I am not a scholar but calling guignol a hand marionette is new to me.
I didn't know that this term existed.

Then I went to rod puppetry and there is a cheezy picture of a hand and rod
mouth puppet illustrated. No mention of Richard Teschner or wayang golek.
I am sure the puppetry scholars among us could go on all day with this sort
of thing. There is spotty coverage of other types of puppetry. But like I
said wikipedia can be edited by anyone so perhaps if any among you want to
take a crack at it, you can do better than calling guignol a hand
marionette. (or maybe I just missed that term in my own puppet
homeschooling)

Just to let you know I am still sitting on my hands , but we puppeteers are
resourceful with our limbs. Does that paint a picture?
