I grew up with out TV and so was not exposed to any of the puppetry in that medium. As a ten year old in Boston (1965) I saw a touring Korean acrobatic troupe (I can best describe it as a cross between Chinese Opera & Chinese Circus with a plot) which caught my imagination. The movie Lili was probably the most direct puppetry aha moment I had as a kid. Much later when I was starting to explore puppetry, seeing Joseph Papp's production of Agamemnon in Central Park (maybe around 1977) really was quite a remarkable theater production and ritual. I had finished creating "Olives of Harvest" a Javanese styled shadow performance with a student gamelan out of the musicology department of Oneonta State University when I was introduced to Bread and Puppet Theater by Dick Siegfried. Peter Shuman and all the variety of folks through Bread and Puppet certainly have been an amazing force and theater, informing and influencing my work. The anti-war movement through the 60s and 70s has also been a significant influence in my choice of work, aesthetics, and ongoing work.
