They remind me of another folktoy: an acorn which has loosely jointed limbs to look like a little animal. You pull out a little wooden cork and put a fly inside for a while and it animates the limbs as it moves around inside the acorn. I too am intrigued by these bristol dolls and have never heard about them. So you get bristol brush fibers and glue them to light figures. Great for a flea circus.
