This would be my first impression of a hobo, not tragedy, although there is value in portraying them that way. Also, the word itself does not mean "HOmeless BOy", but was shortened from "Hoe Boy". Many vagrants that traveled the rails, were field workers and would carry their hoe around with them. Picture here the iconic hobo with the red sack carrying all his (or her's...don't want to be less than politically correct now!) belongings at the end of along stick...presumably his hoe.
