The Efimovs used rod puppetry primarily, and would diusguise the rods with fabric when possible. Teschner seemed indebted to Javanese rod puppets---the Europeans have been influenced by Asian tradition  more than once.

It is not widely known that Obraztsov visited New York in the late 1920s. I am told he saw the remarkable work of Zuni Maud and Yossel Cutler. I would consider them an influence too.
