I could not find the original e-mail; so, I am taking a shot in the  
dark here.  It may have been because Bil Baird often used black tape  
for the pupils of the eyes.  If the tape had dried out and fallen off,  
there would just be white eye balls.  Tape allowed him to change the  
direction of the eye focus as needed.  This was particularly useful in  
film.
