From: "Amy Weinstein" <saltamontesarts-AT-hotmail.com> Subject: PUPT: Puppetry Workshop in Germany Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 21:36:05 -0400 PUPPET BUILDING/PERFORMING WORKSHOP Two exciting Puppetry Workshops are happening this summer in Bavaria, Germany. As part of the "Natur in der Stadt Cham 20001“ (Cham Garden Show 2001), sculptor Sebastian Roser offers two workshops for building and performing rod puppets. These workshops are specifically geared for professional puppeteers, actors/theater professionals, visual artists and visual arts students as well as teachers of all kinds of arts. The number of participants is limited to allow the most one-on-one teacher/student contact possible. The principle languages of the workshop will be German and English with Spanish and Japanes translation readily available. Each workshop will last three weeks and the participants will build a rod puppet in the style of "Michl", the puppet which will be performed throughout the Cham Garden Show. "Michl“ is an official presenter and moderator of the show and several "Michls" will be performing in different areas of the Garden Show, interacting with the viewers as well as pointing them to the various areas of the Gardern Show. The sculpted parts of the puppet will be done by the papercut or paper sculpture method, which was developed by Professor Albrecht Roser. This type of sculpture permits artists of all levels to form very impressive sculptures with simple means. The interior construction and control of the puppet will be patterned after that of the puppet "Michl". This is a control which allows an incredible range of movement and expression but aims to be lightweight and accessible to those without a degree in engineering! Rehearsal and performance techniques will also be important components of each workshop. Besides learning "Movement Techniques, Exercises and Ideas for the Puppeteer“ and participating in "Group Puppet Dynamics“, each participant will actually perform one of the "Michl“ puppets for the audiences at the Garden Show. This is an opportunity to discover what your puppet can do and how you, as a performer, can interact with a wide variety of audience members. As participants complete their own puppets, they will also have the possibility to perform them in front of colleagues as well as public audiences. Two days a week classes will be conducted in the studio (8 hours with a one hour lunch break). Three days a week the mornings will be dedicated to work in the studio with the afternoons given to rehearsal and performing of the puppets throughout the village of Cham, in various points of the Garden Show. The remaining two days will be free for the participants to travel and visit points of interest in the region. Southern Bavaria is one of the most beautiful areas of Germany and Cham is right in the Bavarian forest, which boasts plentiful hiking, quaint towns, river sports and lots of biergartens! Cham is only a 3 hour train ride from the splendid city of Prague as well as a 2 hour ride from world famous Munich. Sculpting and constructing the puppets as well as movement techniques and exercises will be taught by Sebastian Roser and Amy Weinstein. Rehearsal and performance will be directed by professional puppeteers, employed by the Cham Garden Show 2001 to perform "Michl" throughout the duration of the Show, among them Dragica Ivanovic, Amy Weinstein and Gabi Weißenfels. The first workshop session is June 18.through. July 6. The second session runs from July 16 through August 3, 2001. Each session is limited to eight participants. Application for both sessions will be considered. The will be no fee for participation in the workshop. Full participation in all activities, however, will be expected. The cost of materials / tools for each participant is U.S. $75 . Cost for accomodations and meals will be the responsibility of the registrants. Inexpensive accomadations / restaurants are available in the town of Cham. A list of accomodations will be provided upon acceptance to the workshop. To apply, interested persons should send a letter of intent (fax, e-mail or traditional mail) no later than May 31, 2001.
