U$-11 (that was supersceded by I-81) runs up the Shenandoah has three lanes. It's like, two lanes will be northbound and one will be southbound for a mile or so, and then one lane will be northbound and the two-lanes switch to southbound. It is a horribly failed design and cause numerous deaths before I-81 was built. FWIW, the orignal route of U$11 follows what's called the "King's Highway," as it was built by those limey scum in the late 1600s and early 1700s. If you know what you're looking for you can see old tollhouses every 10 miles or so and old inns and taversn about every 5 miles. These were located by the toll road companies who ran the thing. You gotta love hystery to get the most out of vacations. carp
