Actually, +plants+ destroyed the proto-environment of urth.  All of that
methane swirling around was transformed into the Nitrogen-Oxygen mix we
have today by photosynthesis over a period of about a cudzillion years.
Once the plants destroyed the methane it was possible for animal-life to
live.

So in the big scheme of things we ain't all that original.  Just as plants
had no idea what they were creating, neither do we.
