You're going to the wrong bookstores.  A good bookstore will order, when 
possible, through a jobber, usually either Ingram or Baker&Taylor.  That 
should only take a few days to a week.  Of course, Barnes and Noble just 
bought Ingram, I think, so independent bookstores may have more trouble doing 
this in the future.
