First of all, I'm assuming you LOVE the idea of owning and operating a bookstore. Because if you don't, the long hours and mundane tasks you will be required to take on will do you in in no time. Also, whatever you feel you need in up-front capital to launch the business and sustain in through its first few months, you can pretty much double that. That is, if you came in with a good estimate in the first place. Consider what your niche will be as well. Go to other cities/towns and check out the stories of other owners and find out what you need to find out about running such a business. I think Erik's idea of combining it with other products/services is a good idea. Many alternative/used/politico bookstores combine books with cds, records, videos, etc. Larry
