Of +course+ we should support a draft. As it is right now the enlisted military comes from a very small socio-economic portion of the population (lower part of the middle class, or upper part of the lower). As much as we want to think these kids enlist because of ideology, me thinks you will find that the great majority of troopers enlist because of the economic opportunity that they perceive such a move will grant them: They are acting out a mercenary role. Yes, I see most troopers as wage-slaves just like the rest of us, so why limit any kind of slavery to a small segment of thge population? Are we not egalatarians? Also a fair draft would not only put the "obligation" for national service on the entire body of youth, but this would be a great equalizing experience that everyone would participate in. There is nothing more equalizing than an unabashed fanatical drill sergeant with 150 boys and grrls to play with. My exoerience has been that class distinctions generally disappear fairly fast under such a regime. Of course we have to make it fair, so something must be done about officers, but as long as we're stuck with states, let's at least make the service entertaining and educational. I am, commandante-less-than-zero carp
