the minor problem with the draft is that you'll get a high percentage of
the population indoctrinated... many people who get out of military service
will never forget the necessity of hierarchy, authorities, discipline, law
& order and so on.
thus, once you start drafting, you'll get the complete civil society fucked
up.

that's probably the only reason why germany is one of the few states within
the NATO which is still drafting people - it can be calculated that a
professional army would be cheaper, more "efficient" (read: more kills per
minute) and - with the abolishment of the alternative civil service - would
even create jobs.
