Irrelevant fact:

When resting from their difficult sums, the Pythagoreans refused to 
eat anything with a soul, which included animals, presumably each 
other and also beans and similar pulses. Now Pythagoras was right 
about the triangles, but on the other hand the sect did die out, 
presumably with a protein deficiency.
