UK is not in euroland. not yet. That is maybe something you could consider
yourselves lucky with. On the other hand you live in the UK... Where new
labour is more conservative than the tories. Where the prince of whales ahs
to stand up against the
plant-gene-manipulating-blair-supported-mass-food-industry.

Ofcourse, where are things better ?

Recent polls in Flanders show that a majority has low to very high racist
tendencies. The highest flemish government offical had a solution : the
obligation for all those "foreigners" to learn dutch. Perfectly fitting in
the idea that when you are a xenophobe it's always the fault of the other
being different.
