You probably would get readings from a plastic plant.  Some university 
students did the same experiment on a bowl of lime jello.  They found 
the same "thought waves" as were found in the plants.  Apparently, the 
equipment itself and other electric appliances give off interference 
that can be interpreted as brain activity.  But then again, jello is 
made out of once living animal parts.
