Updated 6:46 AM ET June 21, 1999 (EUGENE) -- A rally by self-proclaimed anarchists in Eugene gets out of control... to the point of anarchy. Friday's rally was one of several organized nationally against capitalism. Protesters in Eugene were also opposed to the proliferation of downtown businesses. The rally started peacefully enough, but protesters and police began reacting to escalating incidents. Police eventually turned out in riot gear. Some of the protesters left the scene when officers arrived, but others threw rocks at businesses, intimidated motorists, and blocked streets.
