Partly. The Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs were detonated at 1,000 feet. This
still gives a "dirty" blast. But the reason for an air blast is more
tactical than environmental. It has to do with the blast wave having an
unobstructed path to targeted structures. A ground blast will have the
blast wave blocked by hills and foldds in the ground. Even 1,000 feet
high will allow a lot of areas to remain relatively untouched. Nagasaki
is slightly hilly and there were large areas inside the
Hiorshima-equivalent blast zone that weren't destroyed even though the
Nagasaki blast was bigger.

Think about that environmental argument for a second Chris: We set off
7,000 bombs, the rooskies set off 3,000, China, France, and Great Britain
toss in another 1,000 and you think the +environmental+ effects are going
to be a consideration?

Ahem.
