This still gives a "dirty" blast. But the reason for an air blast is more tactical than environmental. It has to do with the blast wave having an unobstructed path to targeted structures. A ground blast will have the blast wave blocked by hills and foldds in the ground. Even 1,000 feet high will allow a lot of areas to remain relatively untouched. Nagasaki is slightly hilly and there were large areas inside the Hiorshima-equivalent blast zone that weren't destroyed even though the Nagasaki blast was bigger. Think about that environmental argument for a second Chris: We set off 7,000 bombs, the rooskies set off 3,000, China, France, and Great Britain toss in another 1,000 and you think the +environmental+ effects are going to be a consideration?
