Yup: patting whales' heads is how to get in touch. > I see the > reaction to whole Makah whaling issue as being WAY out of proportion to > the actual event. Part of wild living is killing. The thing *is* out of proportion. SS (some say they're Sea Shepherd) of course picked the Makah to run wild about. The Makah stopped whaling in the 1920ies since other nations (guess who) had hunted so many whales the species was endangered. So nobody *told* them to stop. The Makah have wahling and fishing rights under the treaty they signed. The quota now given to them does not mean IWC just writes off another 5 whales per annum: IWC took the Makah quota from a Siberian native nation. As an aside: one should think that this completely ruins one of SS' arguments, but they still claim the *USA* have joined the pirate whaling nations the day the Makah had their successful hunt. I suppose SS thought that was going to be a piece of piss - in the movies, it's always the white guys to win in the Indian wars. I also do miss SS' engagement in further anti-whaling activities since they claim they take action against any whalers regardless of their resp skin colour: the Norwegian whaling season has started, and up to now, we only had reports about Greenpeace getting into brawls with them. Seems that SS is afraid of the Vikings being tougher to fight than the Makah. > Further, (but not directed at you, Mike) the Washington Peoples What Were > Here Before The White Guys Got Here are pretty much locked in a perpetual > state of conflict with the liberal/radical environmental groups. Most wirking class white-folk in Washington > and Oregon can't stand the native americans; adding pissed-off > environmental groups and the warm-and-fuzzy animal lovers into the mix > just further fuels the hatred. There's been enough going on over native fishing rights in that area. I suppose now we're seeing the incredible alliance of SS, EF etc people with the people who do fishing as sports - they're both against native fishing. And as Grand Dragon Watson and his SS say they're "a-political" and accept the support of any politician, no matter what's his political views, as long as that person supports an issue/issues close to their hearts, there's a lot more possible alliances.... > Uh, where was I? Indy-by-gawd-anna, I hope. > Oh, yeah, what's up with this stuff anyways? Nothing more happened so far. SS-Europe's bureau is open Mon, Wed, Fri between 9-13, as they advised me in their letter, so I don't expect anything much from them for a few days. I must say I admire their attempts to get more of me than the email- address, which is anonymous enough: they're inviting me to phone them (yup, ve haff vays...). I do feel tempted to send them something written, though. I mean, they demand an apology for the untruthful things I said, and for having ruined their repuation unjustly... Funny thing is, the Grrman letter they sent me is full of racist comments. First of all, they are talking about "Red Indians" and "tribes" all the time. Then they describe the Makah whaling crew as "wellfed Red Indians wearing gym-shoes". Quite right, if the Makah intend to live up to SS' image of "Red Indians", they should look they'd die from starvation within the next minute or so, and they should probably be wearing mocassins made from buffalo-hide instead of gym-shoes. Not mentioning that paddling a cedar canoe will supply you with enough muscles not to look too starved, and for that purpose, the Makah won't look for weak individuals either, I believe. On the other hand, believing SS owns the ultimate truth, then the cedar canoe was only used to make believe they were following traditional ways, as they chose to enlighten me. Oh, and SS-Europe (they're writing in Grrman and the names of the undersigned persons are Grrman, so this must be a case of "yessterday Chrrmoney, tomorro Europa"...) also gives us the truth about the motivation for hunting whales: of course, it's a greed for profit and a lust to kill. Nothing more, because the "Inuit (Eskimo)" nicknamed the gray whale "The whale which makes you empty your bowels". This, according to the gospel of SS, clearly indicates that the meat of the gray whale is in no way suited for humyn consumption, and therefore they claim "it must be strongly doubted that the whale will make it to the tribe's pots", not mentioning Makah bellies. Makes one wonder how the Makah, the Inuit et al managed to survive for thousands of years, but this is nothing SS would be too concerned about. Mike - if you happen to read this: is there anything you can say as regards the Inuit name for these whales? Anyways, after having read and digested their letter, I feel like writing them something like: "sorry, folks, after reading your stuff, I do not see myself in a position to regret having damaged your reputation unjustly, as it's a long time ago since I last saw people trying to fight off a racist image by spurting out racist comments. And thanks anyway for providing me with some excellent first hand material, yours ever xxx" I reckon myself in good company, though, as another person - IWW member !- who also signed the declaration and does some work for it, has been libeled by a person called Andy from EF Seattle as being a "socialist parasite" and an "ex-communist who turned socialist" when Soviet Union ceased to exist as their fatherland.... I suppose the animal protectionists coat of arms reads: Nothing is too low for us. Which makes a good closing line. catkawin ## CrossPoint v3.11 ##
