Date: 06 Oct 1999 22:27:00 +0200 From: ASWAD-AT-anarch.free.de (catkawin) Subject: Usti Today's late news had a report on the wall of Usti: The report stated that workers did not get very far with building the wall. The wall has been planned for two years already, but today the work was given up for the time being, due to protest from Roma and Sinti from all over Tchechia and Slovakia. The non-Roma (or gadje) population in Usti complains about the Roma being to noisy. The report interviewed an Usti Roma who said there was a difference in culture between them and the "white people", and they were used to show joy. The report continued there were about 300,000 Roma in Tchechia. Roma children almost all get transfered to specials schools for socially conspicuous and/or psychically handicapped children. Therefore, their chance to get an education, a good profession, or for promotion are practically nil. Under the former Communist system, Roma were forced to work in factories, but nowadays, two third of them are unemployed. Therefore, masses of Roma are trying to leave Tchechia for Canada, England, or other European countries. The Usti wall is recognized as a severe hindrance in Pragues attempts to join the EU, a point of view which is shared by the Prague government. Usti city council, however, plans to finish the wall which is a symbol of the problems between Roma and non-Roma." catkawin
