Plus that you have to separate belief in those principles from organised religion. I tend to pray at moments of stress - e.g. penalty-shoot-outs against the Jocks, before my son's hospital operation etc etc. How many of us are really as rational as all these old 19th century positivists were? In any case atheism is as much a belief as Xtianity. Plus over here, the churches are quite congenial places - the worst effects of evangelism have yet to take hold big time. The fact remains that Xtians have played a part in libertarian thought and movements, as have other religions. If anyone hasn't read Peter Marshall's Demanding the Impossible and can bear to give money to Harper-Collins, that's where the easily digestible chunks on Tolstoy, Gandhi, the Ranters, + those US Catholic geezers whose names escape me can be found.
