The reward for this good behavior,Cockburn claimed, was that AFL-CIO president John Sweeney would be granted an audience with Bill Clinton. In NYC, Unite! (AFL-CIO) organizers originally estimated 500 needle workers would rally against the WTO in Battery Park on N30. However, only about 50 from Unite! and a few from the International Longshoremen's Association arrived around 4 PM at the World Trade Center to participate in the protest. The earlier march through the financial distinct was comprised of mostly students, with various representatives from Reclaim the Streets, Industrial Workers of World, Global Sweatshop Coalition, ect. The AFL-CIO's failure to support the NYC WTO protest en masse further corroborates Cockburn's claim.
