It did have alot to do with slavery as the government was fighting for the territory in order to add on the the # of slave states it had. It was his aunt Louisa that paid the fine eventually, but he did want to stay in jail. The tax collecter, though told him that he couldn't allow him to stay in jail with no charges against him. In the book Thoreau is quoted as saying "I am cursed with the charity of my mother's sister," but I'm sure the quotes are not aqurate. Wussy Assed Chaos
