Then maybe you should learn something the locals can use/need.  For
example, in my neighboorhood, we exchange fruits and vegetables that we
grow ourselves.  Or maybe you could do physical labor in exchange for
something else?  I know a guy who builds wood furniture.  He will build
me anything I want, and I make sure his computer stays up and running. 
Doesn't sound like a fair trade?  The guy doesn't understand why nothing
works after he clears his hardrive to make more space  AKA  format
harddrive  :)  Anyway, I think my point is there are many opportunities
to barter with people around you.  I think you would be suprised by how
many people are open to the idea.
