Yet another mayor nailed over WTO</b></font>

And now for a report on how another mayor is faring in the
aftermath of the World Trade Organization-inspired Battle of Seattle.

During the WTO tumult, Eugene Mayor James Torrey was quoted as
saying, "I'm disappointed we're exporting anarchist activists. I don't
want to be recognized as the anarchist capital of the United States, but
that's where we are."

(Vandals allegedly traveled here from the Oregon city.)

Torrey's quote led to formation of Eugene Anarchists for Torrey, a
group that held a mock rally on the Eugene City Hall steps just before
Christmas. About 30 activists sang songs and chanted slogans such as
"Every good revolution needs a Torrey."

Speakers said Torrey's "conservative views" and support for
bringing "polluting and discriminating" corporations such as Hyundai to
Eugene had helped swell the ranks of Eugene's anarchist movement.

The Eugene Register Guard ran one letter accusing Torrey of being
"a closet anarchist." The letter writer reasoned this way: "(Torrey's)
quotes regarding that hippie temper tantrum in Seattle have done nothing
but glorify these ungrateful brats. . . . I thought I was voting for a
good, honest Republican, but nowadays it seems like a vote for Jim
Torrey is actually a vote for anarchy."

Torrey, whose unpaid term of office runs through January 2001, has
been a company owner, radio-station operator and Chamber of Commerce
stalwart. To think of him as a closet anarchist is the stuff of satire.

But no matter. The Eugene Anarchists for Torrey (also known as EAT)
have announced that, as anarchists, they "of course do not plan on
voting."
