I never had to ask permission to leave the table either. At my house we just 
grabbed a plate full, scarfed it down and went on about our business.

The only actual dinner rules we had were stuff like don't talk with your 
mouth full or chew with your mouth open, which are pretty reasonable I guess. 
It's hard to eat  stuff like crawdads and remain  overly polite.
