infoshop.org update 2/23/2000
-----------------------------

This message started out as an update I was going to send to some
anti-authoritarian web geeks, but after thinking about it, I realized
that a longer and more public update is needed.

The Mid-Atlantic Infoshop (now infoshop.org) has been going through a
major re-design and update phase for the past month. I estimate that
this phase will continue for another month, so please be patient if you
have requested something or requested a link.

The tech update comes first.

For those of you who use My Netscape or are setting up/running
Slashcode-based sites, we're making two RDF files (aka channels)
available on a regular basis. The first one, which is based on
infoshop.org's "What's New" page is now available. You can download or
connect to the RDF file at:

http://www.infoshop.org/whatsnew.rdf

Another file is being prepared to capture the breaking news section. It
will be available later this week at: http://www.infoshop.org/news.rdf

These are the only RDF files we will be making available at this time.

Moving on to other news...

IMPROVEMENTS AND CHANGES

# New graphics, header bars, and navigational features
# Attempts to slim down pages so that they download faster
# Switch to dynamic table layout
# Redesign of homepage (thanks to Jessamyn West for her suggestions.
Please visit her site at www.jessamyn.com)
# Revamp of AnarchoHood section. We need your events!
# Added website for the Atlantic Anarchist Circle

UPCOMING NEW FEATURES

# A search engine will be available soon

# New section on homepage: Download of the Week

# Interactive web calendar

# Expansion of content at the Internet Anarchist University

# Transition of anarchist humor section to zine format called "The
Blast!" It will look a lot like The Onion.

# Expansion of the alt version the site (selected sections) to make
text-only pages available. This is being done for people with slow
connections, vision-impaired people, and those using portable devices.

# This summer we hope to move towards using databases for some of the
content.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

# Mid-Atlantic Infoshop has been renamed to "infoshop.org" We don't mind
if you use the old name, but if you change your links, we'd appreciate
it.

# We have entered into a partnership with Activate zine, which is an
Australian anarchist zine serving young people. They will be providing
us with content for the "Anarchy and Young People" section.

# Practical Anarchy zine will be moving to its own domain:
www.practicalanarchy.org

# infoshop.org saw a huge increase in traffic after Seattle, thanks to
our special pages on the events. December was our most popular month
ever, with around 685,000 hits, which breaks down to roughly 44,400
visits. Traffic has slowed down for January and February, but we're
averaging around 460,000 hits, or approximately 34,000 visits.

Thanks for reading this message and visiting infoshop.org!
