(AP) - Authorities arrested between 40 people late Saturday after a march from the University of Oregon campus ended in a standoff just west of the Lane County Jail. Police began arresting people on charges of disorderly conduct, blocking traffic and property damage shortly after 11 p.m., Lt. Rick Siel said. Eugene police were assisted by officers from Springfield police and Oregon State Police. More than 300 people left Prince Lucien Campbell Hall on the UO campus at about 10 p.m. after watching an hour-long film about Eugene's anarchist community. The film, by Tim Lewis of Eugene, included footage of protests during the World Trade Organization meetings in Seattle last December. After people left the building, some began walking in the streets toward downtown, followed by officers. A crowd of 30 to 40 people walked west, linking arms and blocking two of the three lanes. More police arrived, some in riot gear, and informed the marchers they would be arrested if they didn't get out of the street. After the third warning, the marchers began running, scattering through downtown. Many of the marchers headed west, where they were surrounded by police near the jail. Officers used bullhorns to tell marchers, ``We don't want to use force. We don't want people injured.'' A line of officers separated the marchers from about 150 supporters, who yelled at the police. Police have been on alert this weekend because of a four-day ``punk fest'' to conclude on the day of last year's anti-capitalist march-turned-riot. Police estimate the fest has attracted 50 to 150 activists from out of town. http://www.registerguard.com/news/Wire/N0000OR--EugeneArrests.html
