Subject: US, J18 Commemmoration Communique - Eugene Oregon - June 16, 2000

As June 18. 2000 approaches, one doesn't have to look far to see the
fascist tactics the police-state will use to intimidate and repress
those who choose to confront their authority. As anarchists pose more of
a challenge to the cops' legitimacy by pointing out the violent nature
of the capitalist interests they serve, it is no surprise to many that
they would reassert their control through ruthless tactics. Routine
harassment of those who fit the anarchist and punk stereotype has been
constant over the past few days, and leading up to now, the EPD has not
hesitated to tell bold-faced lies about anarchists in the media, and
make arrests on trumped-up charges in an attempt to convince the
populace that their personal safety is in danger.

As we write this, two anarchists sit in Lane Co. Jail on several charges
each of felony arson, and one charge each of criminal mischief. On
Friday morning, the residence of one of them (who was knocked off the
curb of Van Buren Street by an EPD officer, then promtly arrested for
"harassment" two nights earlier while he videotaped them harassing
punks) was raided and searched by numerous law enforcement officers from
several agencies, including Federal agents. What appears to be a
"fishing expedition" for suspects in the same unsolved arsons for which
Craig Rosebraugh and Josh Harper have been subpoenad to a Federal Grand
Jury in Portland, is aimed at destroying the earth and animal liberation
movements. These movements include both above ground supporters of such
tactics, as well as underground warriors, and have posed a serious
threat to industries that are devouring the earth and enslaving animals.

On June 18th of last year, the EPD and Lane County chose to avenge the
uprising in the streets by locking up our anarchist comerade Rob "los
ricos" Thaxton for 7 years. One can only wonder which one of us will
be their next scapegoat-- providing them with the justification they
need to obliterate us. Already, jaywalking and "harassment" charges have
been used to intimidate and instill fear among those who wish for a
stateless society, in which people would organize themselves based on
human need and desire, rather than the soul-killing rules of capitalism.

To those of you who wish to remain on the sidelines of what many of us
believe to be a struggle against the death-grip of a totalitarian
corporate state, we ask that you consider the consequenses of your
silence. Right now in Chiapas, Mexico, families and communities are
bracing for an all out (U$-funded) military offensive against the
Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and those indigenous
resistors for whom the guerillas have taken up arms. Genocide and
ecocide are in their climax stages now, as capital seeks new spaces to
colonize.

While the privileged few among us in the industrialized world continue
to "prosper" off the ruins of wild nature and whole cultures, in Chiapas
and all over the world, including Eugene, those on the margins of the
dominant social order are growing in numbers. As we saw in Seattle and
around the world on June 18, 1999, November 30, 1999 and Mayday 2000,
many are also rising to a new level of militancy against this illusion
of prosperity. Many of us feel that one of the most direct and
courageous way to confront this escalating devastation, is through
economic sabotage. Such courage is not without retaliation, and so
militant self-defense against state repression is a priority as well.

To those who envision a radical change in society, but continue to stand
on the sidewalk, how much more must we lose before fighting back? How
can we stand by silently, in horror, as the engines of industrial
capitalism turn the world into a giant Wal-Mart? We are looking for an
end to all suffering and exploitation, not just that which affects us
most directly. How can WE be labeled as terrorists and vandals, when
even our most extreme actions are taken out of love for freedom and
autonomy? One doesn't have to look far to see genocide, ecocide and
enslavement, yet it is rarely named for the terror that it is. Has
society become so desensitized that such terror is considered to be
worth the material "benefits" reaped by consumers in the industrialized
north?

The time has come to reject our role in maintaining this destructive
society that takes so much more than it gives. Our path of resistance
is two-fold: the creation of networks of mutual aid for community
self-reliance, and the strategic use of economic sabotage and urban
insurrection. Many anarchists believe that these strategies can render
the state and capitalism irrelevant.
