I got a few unhelpful responses to my words: 'Remember the 
chicago martyrs; not to betray them with cheap violence.' 
Such as:

>  Who are you to say the martyrs would and wouldn't be betrayed by?!

And another asking if I hadn't read that the martyrs actually 
called for arms to be carried. No doubt some did. Hopefully 
not for the purpose of "cheap" violence (i.e. merely self-indulgent).

Anyway I did some quick research to find:

"August Spies agreed (to speak at the haymarket meeting), 
and he put a notice of the meeting in that day's Arbeiter Zeitung. 
When later that morning he saw the newly printed posters 
with the line "Workingmen Arm Yourselves and Appear 
in Full Force", however, he said he would not speak unless
these words were removed..."

One of the few that were printed with that line was  produced 
as evidence of murderous intent at the Haymarket trial.
