Is it "tow the line," or "toe the line?"   Both would seem to have a good 
etymological base--canal and dockyard wirk (WIRK?) in the first instance or 
stepping up to a boundary or a line of demarcation in the second.

It's not important, but I started teaching again today and me mind is mush 
so things like this give me wood.
