I've never been sure about the irritating little
smart-ass element. Over here in the UK, we have Sooty
and Sweep - two glove puppets. Sooty, a yellow bear
thing, says nothing; Sweep, a dog, squeaks and is very
naughty; Su, a panda and female can actually speak and
is sensible. There is hope for anarchism though -
years ago when the kids were little we went to a S&S
show at the theatre. Sooty comes on - polite applause,
Su - muted applause...but Sweep - immediately the 3 to
4 yr old audience rise as one brandishing Sweep glove
puppets on clenched little fists shouting, cheering
and screaming 'Go Sweep!' Heart-warming to behold.

Anyway they also introduced a miniature Sooty figure
called Scampy, who will be unknown to such as Dave
Coull whose kids would have been in the earlier Sooty
era. He has the same characteristics as Scrappy Doo.
I'm not sure what's going on...
