That's entirely possible. The rugged individualist is a long standing 
cultural icon here.

Some competition is a good thing, but like anything taken past the 
point of (un)common sense/enlightened self interest, it becomes 
destructive. Ultimately, if we didn't co-operate at some point, we 
would still be fighting over who owns which cave...
