ACTION ALERTS:

No Nazis In Oldham!
Oldham, Thursday 28 June 9.00 a.m.
Oldham Magistrates Court (pedestrian precinct behind Oldham Police Station
    off King Street)

Over 50 Anti-Nazi League supporters succeeded in stopping the Nazi National
Front from marching or holding a rally in Oldham Town Centre on Saturday 16
June. Hundreds of shoppers took Anti-Nazi League leaflets and stickers and
several signed up as new members of the ANL. The Nazi National Front
failed to show up at the Civic Centre, where they had planned to hold a
rally. Instead, ANL supporters rallied as passing drivers honked their
horns in support. Trade union delegations on the day included train
drivers in the RMT with their banner. It was later announced that 14 NF
supporters had been arrested in an estate on the outskirts of Oldham, and
they were held by police over the weekend. Their total mobilisation
numbered less than 20 people, none of whom were from the North West, let
alone from Oldham.

On Thursday June 28th, three NF leaders will appear at Oldham Magistrates
Court for a hearing after pleading not guilty to public order offences.
The NF have announced that they intend to picket the Court to protest at
their treatment by the police. The Anti-Nazi League calls on as many
supporters as possible to be outside the Magistrates Court at 9.00 a.m. for
a counter-protest against the presence of the Nazi National Front in
Oldham.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Getting rid of the Nazis
Hassan Mahamdallie ("In My View"/Socialist Worker U.K.)
23 Jun 01

I remember the Glodwick area of Oldham from the 1980s, and a more put upon
place you could not imagine. I was living in nearby Rochdale at the time, a
town very similar to Oldham. Both had Asian populations herded into the
grottier areas of town living alongside poor white people, where the old
mills used to dominate. The levels of racism Asians suffered shocked me, as
I was from London.

Both towns had been the stamping ground for Nazis for a long time. Both had
local politicians, like Liberal MP Cyril Smith in Rochdale, who saw Asians
as an alien intrusion into Lancashire to be patronised or bullied. Both
towns had newspapers reflecting this bigoted attitude. Asians and any
decent minded person hated the Rochdale Observer and the Oldham Chronicle.
They published letters by local Nazis and condemned any Asian who dared to
fight back against oppression. In 1990 a group of 70 whites rampaged
through the Asian Milkstone Road area of Rochdale spreading terror.

A group of young Asians, who came to be known as the Milkstone 5, defended
their community. The police, who had been entirely absent during the racist
rampage, turned up in force, battered the Asians and charged five with
making petrol bombs.

They were dragged off to the cells, stripped, kept incommunicado for three
days and abused. Rochdale police were openly racist. The Milkstone 5 were
painted in the press as terrorists. The five were eventually acquitted,
after it emerged that none of them had any petrol bombs or matches on them
when arrested.

But things were even worse in Oldham. The Asian population at that time
generally seemed cowed by the racism of the authorities. Things came to a
head in Oldham in the summer of 1989 when racist attacks spiralled. Who
today has heard of Tahir Akram? I certainly have not read anything about
him in the recent lurid and distorted media reports of Asian "racism", of
"no-go areas for whites" and Asians getting "too much of the cake".

Tahir was a 14 year old Asian schoolboy who was walking home in the middle
of the day when he was struck down. A group of whites in a car had been
driving around Glodwick taking pot shots at people with an air rifle. They
shot Tahir. A pellet entered his eye and killed him. The whole community,
Asian, Afro-Caribbean and white, were stunned. The police and press denied
that it was a racist murder.

Under a barrage of hostility deployed by the authorities and the press
against Asian youths they were persuaded (wrongly) to call off a protest.
The other side of this terrible story is that local anti-racists, trade
unionists and socialists went ahead and organised a statement condemning
the murder. They called upon everyone, black and white, not only to oppose
racism but also to unite to fight for better housing, more jobs and
services for all.

In Oldham, Rochdale and other similar Lancashire towns there has always
been a strong anti-racist tradition and a refusal to be divided. It is this
tradition that needs to be built on, along with the message that while we
fight one another politicians are busy screwing us all.

We don't need the "forced integration" advocated by ignorant local MPs. We
don't need barriers going up. We need people to come together and fight for
barriers to be pulled down. That is how we can get rid of the poison that
the Nazi BNP, Combat 18 and NF are busy trying to pump into Oldham.

MORE FACIST-DRIVEN RACIAL UNREST IN BRITAIN

Riots Flare Again in N. Britain
AP
25 Jun 01

BURNLEY, England -- Riot police clashed with white and Asian youths early
Monday as violence flared for a second night in this tough northern town
targeted by right-wing extremists.

About 200 youths from both communities hurled bricks and bottles, and
several cars and shops were set alight. As a police helicopter circled
overhead, mounted police in riot gear moved in to separate gangs of white
and Asian youths.

Two pubs that South Asians claimed were meeting places for racists were
attacked.

Lancashire Police said the violence amounted to "sporadic incidents of
disorder," but the rioting was more severe than on Saturday night, when
gangs of youths pelted police and cars with rocks.

Earlier on Saturday, an Asian taxi driver suffered a fractured cheekbone
when he was attacked by a gang of white men in Burnley. Police said they
were treating the attack as a racist incident.

A second Asian taxi driver suffered minor facial injuries overnight when a
brick was hurled through his windshield, but no other injuries were
reported. Police said four people had been arrested.

Burnley, in northwestern England, is a gritty former textile town - as is
Oldham, 20 miles away, where tensions between white and South Asian
residents erupted into violence for three nights last month.

Both towns suffer high unemployment and have been targeted by the far-right
British National Party. The BNP, which opposes immigration and advocates
racial separation, won more than 10 percent of the vote in two Oldham
constituencies at the June 7 general election. In Burnley, the party polled
11.2 percent of the vote.

About 6,000 of Burnley's 92,000 residents are minorities, mostly of
Pakistani and Bangladeshi descent.

Asian community leaders praised the police handling of the unrest, but said
officers had been slow to respond to the original attack on the taxi
driver.

"It would be a shame for Burnley to be tagged as another Oldham because it
is not," said Burnley's deputy mayor, Rafique Malik.

THE NET IN THE NEWS:

Group Seeks Injunction to Block Racist Web Site
Catherine Bremer (Reuters)
22 Jun 01

PARIS -- A French anti-racism group is asking for an injunction to block
access to a neo-Nazi U.S. Web portal, a move set to fuel a running debate
about Internet controls.

International Action for Justice (AIPJ), whose action comes amid
transatlantic wrangling over a separate case against U.S. Internet service
provider Yahoo! over xenophobic sites, wants France cut off from the U.S.
"Front14" portal which acts as a free speech space for racists.

Front 14's Web site, which carries the slogan "online hate at its best,"
offers domain hosting, web animation and web marketing services for neo-
Nazi organizations wanting to get onto the Internet.

The site currently groups well over 400 racist Web sites and has scores
more under construction, according to the AIPJ, which will seek the
injunction in a Paris court on June 29.

The debate pits those concerned about the proliferation of extreme material
on the Internet against proponents of free speech and highlights the
difficulties in applying national censorship laws to the Web.

"We are asking these national ISPs to prevent access to an address that is
offering hosting and web services for illegal, neo-Nazi militant Web
sites," said AIPJ's lawyer Stephane Lilti.

"We need to solve this problem. We cannot tolerate our laws being flouted
by this site which acts like an incubator for nearly 500 neo-Nazi sites,"
he told Reuters, noting that some of the sites in question are based in
France.

AIPJ wants General Communication Inc., a U.S. Web site hosting company
which carries front14.org, to be banned from offering access to the Web
site to France-based Internet users.

It also wants French ISP association AFA, whose members include all major
French providers covering 87 percent of French Web users, to block access
to the site.

However, the AFA, which was not immediately available for comment Friday,
has told the AIPJ it will not back its stand and argued that limiting
access to Front14 would infringe on privacy rights as it would require
controls on all Web users.

Chicago-based General Communication was also unavailable for comment.

The case comes amid an ongoing spat over a French lawsuit filed last year
by barrister Charles Korman which resulted in a Paris court ordering Yahoo!
to alter its American servers so that France-based Web surfers could not
access Nazi-related material on the Internet. Yahoo! is still fighting the
ruling.

The Council of Europe is drafting the world's first treaty against
cybercrime, a text due to be approved this month which could become a
global standard to fight Internet crime.

But the treaty has come under fire for being vague and Council deputies
have expressed disappointment that there is no specific provision to make
it illegal to spread racist propaganda and hate messages on the Web.

"Incitation to racial hatred is a crime and everybody knows that. And
technically it is quite possible for ISPs to blacklist certain Web sites,"
Lilti said.

Shrinking Indian Secularism
Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema -- Islamabad Policy Research Institute (The News
    International)
24 Jun 01

The recent attack on the shrine of Sheikh Nooruddin in the premises of
famous Chrar-e-Sharif mosque does not augur well for the future of
secularism in India. More than 15,000 devotees from various parts of the
Kashmir valley had come to offer prayers. According to a prestigious Indian
newspaper some unidentified militant threw a grenade in the midst of Friday
congregation killing over ten and injuring around one hundred devotees.

The argument that unidentified militant threw grenade does not make sense
if by militant is meant what the Kashmiris refer as the freedom fighters.
Why would the freedom fighters kill the very people who support and protect
them? However it is possible that the Indian security authorities are
either unable to apprehend the culprits so far or are deliberately
protecting them. If the Indian security forces are not involved then the
whole tragedy reflects the incompetence of those responsible to protect the
innocent citizens. Protesting against the grenade attack the citizens
seemed to have accused the local police and some blamed Special Operation
Group of the State Police.

A more important question that needs to be examined is how the attacks on
minorities and their places of worships are damaging the secularism of
India. The last decade has witnessed increasing attacks on the minorities
in India. Since the willful demolition of the Babri Masjid not only the
Muslims have been subjected to systematic and deliberately contrived
attacks but even the Christians and the Sikhs have been regularly tasting
inhuman injections of Hindu militancy. Almost all Indian analysts never
cease to glorify the Indian version of secularism but rarely refer to its
gradual but regular shrinking. The secularism that flourished under the
earlier rulers of India does not seem to be practiced in India today so
widely as was witnessed in the immediate post-partition period. The
enthusiastic accommodation of the creeping militant version of Hinduism has
already transformed its visible manifestations. To acknowledge the
undesirable transformation rather gracefully is not an easy pursuit
especially if one has been excessively drumming the initially practiced
secularism. The ascendancy of the BJP and its inextricable links with Hindu
militant organizations like the RSS, VHP, Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal along with
the treatment extended to the minorities do not auger well for the existing
skeleton of secularism.

Cognizant of the rapid rise of militant Hinduism it is not too far fetched
to assume that many in India may be lamenting the slow death of secularism
and offering warnings regarding anticipated likely adverse developments.
Alternatively it could also mean that a comprehensively thought out plan is
well underway with a view to support the incumbent rise of Hinduism in all
of its manifestations. Deliberately contrived interpretations like the one
given by Vajpayee in the recent past that the charge sheeted cabinet
ministers Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharati were in Ayodhya on
6th Dec.1992 (the day of Babri Mosque was demolished) only to protect the
mosque merely lends more credence to such a process. A more plausible and
convincing explanation seems to revolve around the gradual realisation of
most of the BJP leaders that an open espousal of Hindutva politics would no
longer pay expected dividends and could also be harmful to their long term
political ambitions. It would only be appropriate to mention here that
Indian CBI's investigations stated in the charge sheet (which was filed in
Oct.1993) that they were very much party to the 'criminal conspiracy' to
demolish the mosque. A special court judge who charged 49 accused in
September 1997 including the above-mentioned ministers upheld this charge
sheet. Currently Liberhan Commission of Inquiry is probing the demolition
of Babri Masjid.

Secularism in classical western sense merely implies a division of
jurisdiction between the church and the state. A secular state not only
guarantees the freedom of religion but also deals with individuals as its
citizens irrespective of religious beliefs. A secular state neither
provides direct or indirect patronage to any particular religion nor
attempts to interfere respective religious practices. Conscious of
incumbent diversity of religions, ethnic groups, deeply imbedded caste
system along with varied creeds, the earlier rulers of India opted for a
secular state. Indeed it was hailed as the most pragmatic approach
especially if viewed within the context of India's pluralistic society.
Although Nehru had once said that the ideal form of secularism was not
possible to practice in a caste-ridden society, he thought that secularism,
even less than ideal form, would be more suitable for India's pluralistic
society. To Nehru secularism meant equal protection of all faiths and equal
opportunities for the followers of all religions. According to Nehru, a
secular India would not establish any religion as an official creed and
would also protect all religions without favouring one at the cost of the
other.

Although the spirit of secularism was embodied in the constitutional
articles 15, 17, and 25 but the word 'secularism' did not appear in the
Indian constitution until 1976 when the 42nd amendment was adopted. The
article 15 states that state shall not discriminate against any citizen on
the grounds of religion, caste, sex and place of birth. The article 17 of
the Indian constitution abolished untouchibility and granted rights to the
Harijans to enter a place of worship that is partially or totally funded by
the state. The article 25 provided religious freedom granting rights to
citizens to freely profess, practice, and propagate their religions subject
only to public order, morality, health and few other stipulated provisions.
Taken together these constitutional provisions meant that the state shall
not discourage or be hostile towards any religion and shall not
discriminate any person because of his religion and shall refrain from
assigning any special position to any particular religion.

While it is true that the constitution of India, in many ways, separated
politics from religion, the constitutional clauses alone could not attain
the desired level of secularism in Indian society. As long as the leaders
who control politics and are responsible for the ultimate political
decisions are either not very clear about the significance and implications
of the secular ideals or deliberately undermine the importance of
secularism in a pluralistic society, the constitutionally enshrined
secularism will continue to confront the society with one challenge after
another. It is ultimately the quality of human mind which matters and not
merely the legislative enactments or even the constitutional articles. One
significant challenge was born the day the Hindu militant forces, with the
tacit connivance of even those who claimed to be liberal and secular,
demolished the Babri mosque.

In many ways the destruction of Babri mosque was the product of slow
communalisation of Indian politics. This trend managed to make a non-issue
into one that menacingly threatened and continues to threaten the existing
fragile fabric of Indian secularism. Even today the controversy unleashed
by the demolition of the mosque haunts many in India. The inability of
Indian Lok Sabha to carry on with its normal business in the recent past
because of opposition's insistence for resignation of the charge-sheeted
ministers merely reflects one aspect of the ongoing damage-process.

The advent of BJP's government has further facilitated the communalisation
process. Wearing a thin secular mask the BJP government appears to have
accelerated the process of promoting the RSS ideology which in turn is
eroding the secular ideals as were enunciated by the earlier rulers of
India. It is often reported that around 70 percent BJP assembly members are
RSS nominees. In fact most members of the BJP are products of RSS with
strong belief in Hindu supremacist doctrine. Both the BJP and the RSS
support the Hindu Rashtriya.

Apart from rapidly increasing attacks on the Muslims, the Christians and
the Sikhs in various parts of India and at different times coupled with the
destruction of many of their places of worship, replacing or rewriting the
age old accepted standard history books with a view to saffronize or
Hinduize the Indian history amounts to disowning the rich cultural heritage
and depriving the younger generations of the true facts of history. History
teaches values as practiced in the past but a distorted history is likely
to distort the values as well. Perhaps that's why an eminent Indian
historian felt compelled to stress that such policies are making sure that
the next generation of the Indians turn out to be 'morons'.

While many in India may claim that BJP is not India and repeatedly point
out that it has only 180 seats in 543 member Lok Sabha, there is no doubt
that the BJP has been successful in retaining the support of many secular
parties in the ruling alliance (NDA) despite its periodic but consistent
spurts for non secular pursuits. Vajpayee's assertion that construction of
Ram temple at the demolished Babri mosque's site in Ayodhya is 'an
expression of national sentiments which is yet to be realised' was unable
to invoke any strong reactions among the NDA partners of the BJP. At best
one partner merely stated that temple construction may be an agenda of one
alliance member but it is not included in the NDA collective agenda. One
has to admire some of BJP's tactics. While it never loses sight of major
RSS objectives, its makes carefully contrived moves towards the erosion of
secularism in a gradual and systematic manner.

RIGHTWING QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
For those who believe that fascism is only a thing of the past

My Favorite Post On AFN [the usenet newsgroup alt.flame.niggers]
anonymous
25 Jun 01

Nobody likes ugly niggers, not even nigger babies. Psychologists and
scientists have conducted experiments that consist of showing 8" x
10"bpictures of people's faces to nigger babies and recording their
reactions. When the nigger baby is presented a picture of a Caucasian, the
nigger baby would coo and smile. When the nigger baby is presented a
picture of a nigger, the nigger baby would scream and cry, even if it was a
picture of it's own nigger mother!

My theory, as always, is that this prejudice is based on the "nigger nose".
Now of course, the nigger forehead that slopes backward at a 45 degree
angle, the enormous blubbery lips, the dry kinky hair, and the scaly-ashy
skin are certainly grotesque, but *nothing* approaches the horror of the
"nigger nose". The broad, flat nasal architecture, and the freakishly
grotesque way the nostrils twist and flare are the stuff of nightmares. The
apertures of the nostrils usually flare in an outward direction
(reminiscent of the headlights on a Ford "Model A"), exposing the mucous-
membrane lining of the nose, as well as the kinky nose hairs. Just
imagining a "nigger nose" is a truly repulsive, revolting image.

Get up and go look at yourself in the mirror...We'll wait for you,
niggerstaR!, and then hurry back because I have an important point to
make.

Do you see what I mean??? Didn't the ugly image staring back at you make
you want to vomit? The "nigger nose" has made me nauseous on more than one
occasion.

Your desire to come to AFN is *pure envy*, niggerstaR!, and this envy
manifests itself in a form of self-hatred and rage. I can only imagine the
inadequacy and frustration you must feel, and so you want to "lash out" in
AFN. You want the success and intelligence of the White man, but you'll
never have this because you're a nigger. You want a White woman to love
you and give you a beautiful blond-haired, blue-eyed child that looks like
her, but you'll never have this because you're a nigger. You're a
permanent outcast, with no hope for competing in the White man's world,
so you vote for the democrat and beg for Affirmative Action.

But don't blame the contributers to AFN!! IT'S YOUR PARENTS FAULT, YOU
STUPID NIGGER!!!!! Have you ever heard of "genetics", niggerboy?? Your
parents are the ones who gave you the thick blubbery lips, the nappy kinky
hair, the pimples that form on your neck, and the disgustingly ape-like
"nigger nose". So how do you get revenge?

It's simple, find your parents (and I realize it will be a challenge to
identify your father), and GIVE THEM BOTH A SEVERE BEATING!!! Tell your
mother: "Look here, Mamma, I'm not going to marry some ugly nigger woman
like you, and I'm going to beat the shit out of you just for being the ugly
nigger woman that gave birth to me!!!" If you're lucky enough to find your
father, tell him he should have kept it in his trousers, and then beat the
shit out of the worthless old man.

If your parents are dead, just urinate on their graves. They deserve it and
you'll feel much better. I'm always glad to be of assistance in the
worthless, fruitless stuggle that you call your life, niggerstaR!.
