Excerpts,

                         The skies they were ashen & sober;
The leaves they were crisped & sere--
                         The leaves they were withering & sere;
It was night in the lonesome October
                         Of my most immemorial year.

                                     --- Edgar Allan Poe, Ulalume

OCTOBER 30 -- MARTIANS!
Martians, little grey men who now live in Texass
(all calling themselves Dan Wirt), attack New Jersey.

According to the Washington Post, President Reagan's
attempts at conciliation with the Soviet Union in Geneva in
1985 included a vow that the U.S. would join the USSR in
case Earth was invaded by aliens from outer space.

Alternately, from the Jubilee Saints Calendar:

 FLORENCE KELLY
American social work activist, pioneering rights reformer.

Chan Kom, Mexico: At midnight the ANGELITOS, spirits
of dead children (& you know who you are), come. Doors
are decorated with flowers to welcome them. Offerings of
food are left for them & they stay the night.

DEVIL'S NIGHT.

1871 -- French philosopher, Symbolist poet, essayist, &
critic Paul Valery lives, in Sète. Noted for his sensuous
writing style. Member of the 19th-century poetic
school of Symbolism, & its last great representantive.

"A poem is never finished, only abandoned."

1885 -- Ezra Pound --"humane, but not human" according
to fellow poet e.e. cummings -- lives, Hailey, Idaho.

Rexroth^Òs philosophical reveries are much more interesting
than the comparable works of T.S. Eliot & Ezra Pound ^×
two poets he heartily disliked & whose influence he
combatted all his life. At their best they may be ^Ógreater^Ô
poets (though even that is debatable), but Rexroth is
certainly a saner & wiser one. He has none of
Eliot^Òs snobbery or neurotic prissiness, & even at his
crustiest he is far less cranky, obsessive & self-indulgent
than Pound. You can take his reflections seriously without
having to make allowances for some absurd
reactionary ideology.

1893 -- Atlas Shrugged?: Charles Atlas, the "World's
Most Perfectly Developed Man". Gets a missile & a tire
company named in his honor, & better yet, is the central
character in a rather badly-writ fiction by Ayn Rand.

1904 -- George Navel lives, France. Self-educated author,
anarchist. Fought with C.N.T during Spanish Revolution
of 1936. Describes his life & odd jobs in such books as
Travaux (Work, 1945), Sable et limon
(Sand & Silt, 1952), etc. Died November 1, 1993.

1906 -- US: Scheduled to speak at a meeting to protest the
Oct. 27 arrests of several anarchists for debating in the "Land
of Free Speech" whether Czolgosz was an anarchist, Emma
Goldman is arrested for articles published in Mother Earth &
for inciting to riot. Nine others also arrested.

1911 -- Augusto Masetti, a soldier in the Bologna barracks,
shouting "Anarchy Lives!" as he floors the gas pedal, runs
down Colonel Stroppa with a car as Stroppa exhorts his
soldiers to depart for Libya. Stroppa is injured, & Masetti
was committed to an asylum (to avoid trying him openly
in court).

1916 -- IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) union
members forced to run gauntlet by some of Everett,
Washington's finest citizens.

1938 -- USA: Martian UFOs land at Grover's Mill, New Jersey.
http://www.parascope.com/articles/0697/cb01.jpg

This radio broadcast causes widespread fears that Martian
soldiers are landing in New Jersey. Drivers trying to escape
the commie invaders clog highways, & one Pittsburgh
woman, shrieking "I'd rather die this way," was saved only
at the last moment from poisoning herself.

Film & radio genius, Welles would be broken by the
Hollywood money men.

1945 -- At Last?: US government, known for a little fancy
footwork of its own, announces end of shoe rationing.

1956 -- Hungary 1956

Red Army tanks pull out of Hungary, as demanded in
an ultimatum by the workers' councils.
It seemed as if the people had won.

1961 -- Soviet Union tests a 58 megaton hydrogen bomb,
removing Josef Stalin's body from Lenin's
tomb in Red Square. Largest explosion to date.

1967 -- Benefit at the Fillmore for KPFA radio station.
Pink Floyd & the Sopwith Camel performed.

1983 -- 500,000 Dutch in anti-missile rally, the Hague.

1986 -- Beloved & Respected Comrade Leader Attorney
General Ed Meese urges employers to begin spying on
workers in "locker rooms, parking lots, shipping & mail
room areas & even the nearby taverns" to try to catch them
using drugs.

"My supervisor at Boeing informed us at a crew meeting,
"security is bitching again about you guys smoking that
wacky weed in the parking lot. Now, can't ya wait until
you're out on the freeway?""

1989 -- A courageous calico cat with a badly mistaken sense
of right & wrong, with a flying leap, sends a pit bull dog
running when it tries to beat up a poodle.

                              "We've been invaded...
                                    but don't panic"
