US Senator Paul Wellstone, who the Republicans targeted for removal in 
their battle to regain control of the Senate, died in a plane crash 
today, just 11 days before the election.

Two years ago, Gov. Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash just 4 days 
before election day, as he was pulling ahead of John Ashcroft in the 
polls.  Ashcroft thought he had the election in the bag until 
Carnahan's wife was appointed to take her husband's place if he were to 
win the vote (it was too late to take him off the ballot).
