I buy lotto tickets because it's a cheap high.  I buy them as far
ahead as possible and spend the intervening days fantasizing
about what I'll do with all that money.  Cheaper than the movies
and cheaper than drugs or booze.

As far as the "work ethic" is concerned.  The real reward one
gets from doing a job the best one can is spiritual, not
material.
