I ditched Outlook and got Eudora a couple of years ago.  Eudora doesn't do
the carat thing by default but puts gray bars up the sides where material
is quoted...unless you don't have Eudora and then the emails get converted
to carats by default.   I don't mind carats if there's only been one reply,
but after things have been passed back and forth those damn things make it
unreadable, especially if I forward a post to another account; then it's
gray lines AND carats.
