Is there a difference in "nationalism" and "patriotism"?  I
recall Dr. Samuel Johnson's (1709-1784)caveat, "Patriotism is the
last refuge of a scoundrel." (quoted by James Boswell).  If they
are synonymous then the concept existed at least as far back as
the 18th century.
