the only subculture scene i can think of that has
lived up to the hype, both media and their own, is the
black metal scene in norway. 

that scene seemed to be, maybe still is, crazy with
their band members burning churches and killing each
other. it seems the extremes were limited to norway
where the scene was more or less born. here in the
states all they seemed to do was wear corpsepaint and
pretend to be evil and scary.
