They really emphais promotion on senority which is an accepted method of promotion and supported by the US labor movement. Women because of family issues tend to quit jobs or take leaves of absences (like having children) which sets their senority clock back to zero. Where i work i get paid about twice the amount of new hires (been there ten years and work a side contact job for the same company). Its a mostly female dominated profession (mental health case management). On the surface it looks like sexual discrimination but it is mostly senority plus my williness to work extra hours for extra pay (which on my team is aviable but women do not take advantage of..I know, they have other demands of their time). The point is not that the enterprize i work for discriminates, the wage differentials arise from personal choices. The real thing is not to demand special treatment for women which would just hurt males and turn them reactionary...the real point is to abolish the wage system all together.
