Two presumed assistants of radikal free again

Sa., 15th June 1996
- The warrants against two of the three presumed assistants of the leftist
magazine radikal who gave themselves up to the courts in Bremen after a
one-year flight have been dropped under conditions; Jutta Weissbach from Bremen
and Ulli Faltin from Oldenburg had to put up 20.000 Mark bail each and are not
allowed to keep contact to one another or 20 other people who have been accused
in the radikal-proceedings. Amongst others, Weissbach is prohibited to see her
girl-friend. Above that both have to register with the police three times a
week.

The third person charged, Frank Grossinsky, is to remain in custody - he has
been accused of having been involved in the making of the current issue of the
radikal which was published last week. The charges against a third person who is
still withdrawing himself from the courts have also been expanded accordingly.

The police had been searching for the accused people since the 13th of June
1995, when special police forces raided 50 private homes and leftist projects
throughout Germany. According to official statements the move was aimed against
members of terrorist and criminal organizations (according to Paragraphs 129
and 129a of the German law). The attorneys have accused presumed members of
radikal of being members of the criminal organization and
underground-magazine radikal whose aim it is to promote terrorist
organizations. According to the attorneys the contents of the radikal are all
illegal. To counter this, some radikal-Groups referred to the contents of the
last issues of radikal in a flyer, stating that they mainly contained
discussions and analysis, for example about racism, sexism, nationalism and the
situation in Kurdistan and that in the past the attorneys had only managed to
criminalize individual articles. The broader left also judged the police move as
an attempt to destroy and confuse leftist structures. The minister of the
Interior, Manfred Kanther, said in an interview that it was a preventory move
against the leftist scene. Groups of radikal were especially critical of the
established and liberal press which spread the official accounts uncritically
and of the wider leftist movement who developed no solidarity to those involved
worth mentioning.

Large parts of the magazine can be found on the web-site of the Netherlands
Solidaritygroup Political Prisoners. The group published the incriminated
magazine in support of the people involved in the so-called radikal-Verfahren
(radikal-proceedings - the author) and because we want to guarantee uncensored
information exchange between the radical left. The URL-Adress of the site is:
