Russia's largest coal mine goes on strike over back wages
VORKUTA, Russia (AP) -- Work at Russia's largest coal mine ground to a halt
Thursday when employees went on strike to demand wages that are now five months
overdue.

About 1,200 miners participated in the protest at Vorshagorskaya mine in the
Arctic region of Komi, strike leader Konstantin Pimenov said.

Overdue wages have become a chronic national problem, igniting several major
strikes.

Miners throughout Russia walked out last month, but ended the strike after eight
days when the government promised to send their pay. Many miners say they're
still waiting for the money.

The Vorshagorskaya miners are owed $10 million, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.
The workers want the mine's former director investigated to see where the mine's
profits went, the news agency said.
