We are aware of the contents of the agreements of San Andres. We have carefully watched and understand the actions of the federal government of Mexico. We are also painfully aware of the intrusion and manipulation of our own government, the government of the United States, which at this point seems only to hear the voices of large multi-national corporations and banks, instead of the voices of the millions of citizens of the United States who disagree with those policies that are provoking such a large degree of human suffering in Mexico. We have stood at your side since we first began to understand the real Mexico on January 1 of 1994. We have demonstrated at Mexican consulates, carried out marches, gathered petitions, read each one of your communiques on the internet and in newsletters and magazines. We have also packed our bags and traveled to your communities as students of your will to organize a different kind of society. Each of us, in our places, as social activists, organizers, parents, as university professors or students, Mexican immigrants or displaced workers have done what is possible. It is difficult for us at times. This is a cold culture which makes everything, even human solidarity a commodity. This is a culture which manipulates information that creates confusion and hopelessness. This is a culture which seduces us with its comfort and foments fear and hatred by claiming that our greatest enemies are the poor who cross theU.S. borders, and the poor who live forgotten in the ghettoes of our big cities and the crevices of our mountains. This is a culture which above all wants us to believe that we are powerless and can be successful only if we act alone. We have seen how with your patience, wisdom and unity you have constructed a different path against enormous odds. It is an example burned into our memory. During this crisis, we want you to know that we are struggling to apply that example. We will still demonstrate, march, and write letters. We realize however, that as residents of the United States, our responsibility for constructing a strong opposition movement to U.S. policies is great. If we are to stand at your side, we must also use patience, wisdom and unity to organize ourselves and overcome this low-intensity war which threatens us all. We simply want to say, we have not forgotten you. We are here. We will continue to resist. With respect and admiration, Signature --- from list aut-op-sy-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
