German workers strike at U.S. military bases
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- About 2,000 Germans walked off their jobs at U.S.
military bases Monday in a dispute over job security and severance pay, union
officials said.

The strike, approved last week by the German White Collar Workers Union and the
Transport and Public Service Union, was expected to extend to other bases
throughout the week.

The U.S. military employs about 15,000 civilian workers in Germany. Combined
with those working in Germany for other North Atlantic Treaty Organization
allies -- Britain, France and Belgium -- 35,000 workers could potentially
strike.

Many Germans lost jobs after U.S. and NATO troops in Germany were reduced
following the end of the Cold War.

The U.S. Army says it is offering an improved severance package -- a maximum of
12 months' pay, compared to the current limit of five months.

Talks deadlocked last month, the U.S. military said.
