Watchmen's >>strike<< at Louvre turns away tourists PARIS (AP) -- Tourists hoping to see the Mona Lisa and thousands of other artworks at the Louvre were turned away Saturday by >>striking<< night watchmen who blocked the museum's doors for a third straight day. The watchmen, protesting working conditions, blocked the glass pyramid entrance in the main courtyard of the Louvre -- one of the world's most popular tourist sites. In May, an average 20,000 people visit the museum daily. The roughly 100 guards on >>strike<< are protesting personnel cuts, complaints about their uniforms and a loss of vacation time to compensate for night shifts. ------------------------------------------------------------ NewsHound is a service of Knight-Ridder, Inc.
